If you really think about it, the doctrines in the Book of Mormon ARE more "universal" than those in other LDS scriptures -- namely the D & C and the Pearl of Great Price.
In the case of The Book of Mormon, I believe the more universal appeal of the book is because the Lord designed The Book of Mormon to bring souls to the Savior -- or, as Nephi said -- "to persuade men to come unto the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, and be saved."
The D. & C., on the other hand, establishes the "rules" of the Kingdom and brings forth the order we are to follow because it contains the "Latter-day Revelations" which pertain to our day.
The Pearl of Great Price -- like the Book of Mormon -- also restores knowledge which has been taken from the earth -- i.e., information about the Temple, etc., and about the pre-existence.
Hopefully, this amazing Baptist minister will one day see the truth in those two scriptures as well.
Again -- fascinating. Thanks so much for sharing this.
PS: I should have said that the Pearl of Great Price -- like the Book of Mormon -- also restores knowledge which has been taken from the earth; however, that knowledge such as information about the Temple, and about the pre-existence, would be outside the Protestant scriptural world view.
Regardless -- as I said -- the article is fascinating.
I am concerned that the references the minister quotes don't match the references in my Book of Mormon - any idea what version of the BOM he was using? And, what version was he reading?
Charlene, the Baptist minister mentions that he is quoting from a older RLDS (Reorganized LDS) edition of the Book of Mormon, which has chapters of more than 100 verses. I found many of the verses in our current Book of Mormon, but they were different chapter and verse numbers. If you search some of the major verse words in our Index, you can find the current references.
Some that he quoted from Mosiah 1:112 (or so) are located in Mosiah 3:17-19 of our current Book of Mormon edition. They seemed to have been quoted correctly. His "testimony" of this precious scripture is sincere. Oh that he will realize that it also indicates that Joseph Smith is God's chosen prophet of the gospel's restoration.
Thank you, Candleman and friends, for your excellent insights and comments on the Book of Mormon thus far. I am enjoying reading this vital "Testament of Jesus Christ" together with a motivated and spiritual group.
